the boy and broken kite
The Boy and the Broken Kite
Once in a small village, there was a young boy named Arjun who dreamed of becoming the best kite-flyer in the village. Every year, his village held a kite-flying competition that was the talk of the town. Arjun had watched in awe each year as the colorful kites danced across the sky, and he imagined himself holding the string to the winning kite.
Arjun’s family was poor, and they couldn’t afford fancy kites. He had to make do with scraps of paper, sticks, and old string he found around the village. One day, Arjun found a broken kite lying in a ditch near his home. Its frame was cracked, and the paper was torn. But to Arjun, it was beautiful. He took it home, repaired the torn paper with some glue he borrowed, and fixed the frame with twigs he found in the forest. After hours of careful work, the kite was ready, albeit a bit crooked.
With his patched-up kite, Arjun started practicing in the evenings. The kite was unsteady and would often spiral out of control, crashing to the ground. Villagers would laugh and joke, “Arjun, your kite flies like a drunken bird!” But Arjun didn’t mind. Each time his kite fell, he picked it up, fixed it, and tried again. The boy was determined to learn from each failure.
Weeks turned into months, and the competition was just a few days away. Arjun was nervous, but he kept practicing, even though his kite was no match for the new, colorful kites others had. On the day of the competition, the villagers gathered in the field. The sky was a beautiful blue canvas, ready to be painted with kites. Children and adults released their kites one by one, and the air filled with colors and laughter.
When Arjun let his kite fly, it started unsteadily as usual. The villagers chuckled at his crooked kite among the perfectly crafted ones. But Arjun kept guiding it with focus and skill he had honed over the months. As the wind picked up, his kite began to climb higher and higher. With each gust, he expertly steered it, while others struggled to keep control of their brand-new kites.
Slowly, the laughter faded, and the villagers noticed Arjun’s kite soaring higher than anyone else’s. His patched-up, crooked kite flew like it belonged in the heavens, unwavering and proud. After an intense hour, Arjun’s kite was the only one left flying.
The village chief came up to Arjun, amazed. “How did you do it, Arjun?” he asked. Arjun smiled and said, “It wasn’t easy. But each time I fell, I learned something. My kite may not be perfect, but it’s strong and unbreakable, just like me.”
From that day, Arjun became a symbol of resilience in his village. He showed everyone that success doesn’t come from having the best resources or the easiest path—it comes from perseverance, dedication, and learning from failure.
Youngsters in the village would often hear his story and say, “If Arjun’s kite can soar, so can we.” And they did. Inspired by Arjun, they began to dream big, knowing that even the most imperfect start can lead to the greatest heights.
